Whenever I talk to people about budgeting, everyone has an opinion on how to create the “best” budget: write it all out, create an Excel file, clip coupons, balance your checkbook, save 10%, track your spending, only carry cash, only carry your debit card, get an app that syncs with your bank account app, review your receipts, and on and on….
But the best budget is simply whatever budget you are going to follow!
Let me say that again: the best budget is the budget you follow.
For me, I love to write it down in a notebook before putting it in the EveryDollar app. My husband loves a good Excel spreadsheet. We don’t have monthly budget meetings, we have weekly ones! Sunday nights we sit down with a big bowl of ice cream to go over the past week and look forward to the week ahead.
As long as you make sure every dollar is accounted for before the month starts and have the involvement of your spouse or accountability partner, have some fun with the budget! There’s no cookie cutter way to make your budget – do whatever works for your family!
